After a fantastic start to the season, which sees Alex Fontana leading the Pro-Am standings in the International GT Open, the Swiss driver is all set to get back behind the wheel for the second round, scheduled for 16-18 May at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Fresh from a victory and a second place in his class in the first two races of the year, Alex will once again be driving the Car Collection Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 R (992), ready to compete for another impressive result on one of the most famous tracks in the world of motor racing.
Fontana knows the Belgian track very well, having competed there several times over the years. The Ticino driver finished 2nd in the Pro-Am class at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps two seasons ago, as well as 4th in class last year in the 12-hour race, part of the 24H Series, narrowly missing out on victory. Furthermore, Fontana scored his first points in the International GT Open on the Belgian circuit, finishing 7th in the endurance event in 2024. This is also a track on which he has competed in single-seaters in the F3, F2 and GP3 categories.
Once again, the Spa-Francorchamps weekend will see the International GT Open adopt the GT Open 500 format, replacing the two standard sprint races with a single 2-hour and 55-minute race. The weekend will begin on Friday 16 May with two 60-minute free practice sessions, the first starting at 11:47 and the second at 16:27. Saturday 17 will see a single 40-minute session reserved for bronze drivers, in which the Swiss driver will be involved as a coach, starting at 9:00 a.m., with the two qualifying sessions scheduled for 11:05 a.m. and 3:10 p.m. respectively. The race will take place on Sunday 18, with the green flag for the GT Open 500 at Spa due to drop at 11:25.
Alex Fontana
“It’s really great to be back racing at Spa-Francorchamps: it’s a truly unique track, and competing here is always a pleasure. After such a positive start to the season, expectations are high and we’ll be trying to give our best and achieve another significant result. It is going to be a very difficult race; the endurance format puts drivers and teams to the test, but we are looking forward to the challenge.”
