Alex Fontana at the Nürburgring 24 Hours

20/05/2021

Alex Fontana is ready to add another major race to his sporting curriculum: the Nürburgring 24 Hours, one of the world’s most famous and most demanding endurance races. For the 2021 edition, scheduled for the weekend of the 5th and 6th of June, the Swiss driver has been called up by the Konrad Motorsport team and will race at the wheel of a Lamborghini Huracàn GT3 Evo. This will be Fontana’s debut in this enthralling race, but he will benefit from solid foundations as he approaches the challenged.

The Swiss driver has already experienced the 25.378 km circuit that combines the legendary Nordschleife with the modern circuit, which has also been used for numerous Formula 1 Grands Prix. Fontana has in fact made three appearances in the VLN, the series revolving around the Nürburgring 24 Hours, with all the rounds disputed at the famous "Green Hell". Alex also has experience in similar events such as the Spa 24 Hours.

Lastly, Fontana will be driving the same type of car that he is racing in the GT World Challenge , in which he is currently leading the Silver Cup stands for the Emil Frey Racing team, as well as lying fourth in the overall classification.

The versatile driver from Lugano has already been testing with Konrad Motorsport, a team with over 40 years of racing behind it, and was due to have disputed the first round of the NLS championship (the former VLN), which was then cancelled due to snow. For the Nürburgring 24 Hours, Fontana will be teaming up with Axcil Jefferies, a Formula 2 rival back in 2012, Michele Di Martino and Tim Zimmermann. Their Lamborghini #19 will be running in the highest SP9 class. The long weekend of the “ADAC TOTAL 24h-Rennen” will begin on Thursday 3 June, with the first two qualifying sessions at 12:30 AM and 8:30 PM. Friday 4 June will see Q3 at 3:30 PM and Top Qualifying at 6:30 PM for the definitive grid. A 30 minute warm up will be held on the Saturday from 11:30 alle 12:30, ahead of the start of the race at 3:30.

Alex Fontana
"My 2021 schedule is shaping up nicely and I’m delighted to confirm that I’ll be taking part in the Nürburgring 24 Hours. This is a race I’ve long wanted to test myself in and the Konrad Motorsport team have offered me a great opportunity to realise this dream. I’ll be driving for a really experienced team and with the Lamborghini Huracàn GT3 Evo, the same car that I’m driving in the GT World Challenge Europe with some great results. The initial test sessions soon allowed us to establish a good understanding within the team. We’ll be aiming for the best result possible, overcoming all the innumerable challenges this legendary race is bound to throw up, and against adversaries of the highest level.”
