Alex Fontana is heading to Spa-Francorchamps for the third round of the 2024 GT Open season. What will be the first endurance race of the year will feature a format introduced over the last few seasons that has guaranteed great racing and continued interest. The Swiss driver will be competing with his teammate “Hash”, an American graduate of the AF Academy, at the wheel of the Porsche 992 GT3 R entered by the Car Collection team in the PRO-AM category. The #12 team will be seeking to make up for the unfortunate Hockenheim weekend, when Hash was forced to retire when leading the class standings after a collision with the Mercedes of Charles Bateman.
For Alex Fontana, the return to Spa is special.Last year on this circuit he conquered a 2nd place in the historic 24 Hours of the GT World Challenge Europe series, again in the PRO-AM category and again with the Car Collection, which was supporting Centri Porsche Ticino, and his teammates Ivan Jacoma, Niki Leutwiler and Nico Menzel. It was also here that he debuted and scored his first points in the GP3 Series with Jenzer Motorsport, back in 2011 and he has competed here on numerous occasions here in various championships over the years. The objective, therefore, is to add the upcoming race to the list of memorable races on the Belgian circuit.
The race will have a different format to the preceding rounds of the International GT Open: the duration will be of 2 hours and 40 minutes + 1 lap in which the drivers of each crew will be required to make no less than three pitstops in three windows that will divide the various phases of the race into equal parts. Each driver will take two stints and a driver change will be obligatory at each pitstop. The starting grid will be established on the basis of the average times recorded during the two qualifying sessions on the Saturday.Lastly, for this race double points will be on offer with respect to those available at the previous rounds, giving the drivers an opportunity to make great strides in the championship standings. The race will start on 26 May 2024 at 12:00 AM.
