The Swiss driver in the Jaguar conquers the Blancpain GT Series for young drivers in the finale in Spain

Alex Fontana is the new Silver Cup 2018 champion in the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup. At the wheel of the Emil Frey Jaguar Racing XK the Swiss driver completed a fight-back that was almost too much to hope for on the eve of the Spanish weekend at Montmelò, the circuit located in the industrial suburbs of Barcelona that hosts the grand finale of the reference series for GT3 cars in Europe. Starting from 22nd place on the grid after qualifying, Adrian Zaugg and Mikael Granier, who shared the cockpit of car No. 54 with Alex, crowned a sensational come back. Once the team’s direct rivals for the Silver Cup in the Mercedes had retired in the second hour of the race, the Swiss team’s drivers not only inherited the class win but also secured a 3rd place finish overall in a field of 52 starters, just a step away from the podium. This fantastic result came at the end of a season that will see the Jaguar bowing out of the championship, but which above all, thanks to the results obtained right from the Monza round with Alex, Adrian and Mikael, saw Lorenz Frey and all the Swiss team convinced to proceed for the full season, through to the conquest of this well-deserved title.

Alex Fontana
“This really is a sensational feeling, all the more so because Emil Frey Racing built the Jaguar a number of years ago. We are the drivers who have been privileged to bring the story of the car to an end, on a high note it has to be said, but we also have to recognise the work of those who cam before us and that of the engineers who back at home have never stopped developing the project. Good luck comes and goes. We have often been a little unfortunate over the course of the season, but we’ve never given up and now our efforts have paid off. Special thanks go to all the team, to Lorenz Frey, to my teammates, to my family and to the friends who have always supported me, as well as to the sponsors who have believed in this project and with whom I'm sure we’ll have a chance to celebrate appropriately in the days to come.”
