Alex Fontana competes on two fronts in Barcelona to conclude the GT World Challenge Europe season in style

27/09/2023
Having already claimed the championship title in the Pro-Am class with Centri Porsche Ticino, Alex Fontana is preparing to conclude the 2023 season in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS in fine style, with the final round being staged on the Barcelona circuit. For the Swiss driver, this will be a particularly intensive weekend given his parallel participation in the latest round on the GT4 European Series.

Fontana, together with his fellow Swiss nations and teammates Ivan Jacoma and Niki Leutwiler, made sure of the class title last time out in the Nürburgring 3 Hours, thanks to a victory and two second-place finishes at the wheel of the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS CS number 24.

The Barcelona circuit, which also hosts the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, has proved a happy hunting ground for Alex in the past and free of the pressures of getting a result he will be able to push to the limit, perhaps even competing for the overall victory, as was the case two weeks ago in the 24 Hours race held on the Montmelò circuit. Centri Porsche Ticino decided to compete in that event in view of this weekend’s GT World Challenge Europe finale.

In the supporting GT4 European Series, the Swiss drive will be making his second appearance of the year after Spa-Francorchamps, again with Centri Porsche Ticino and again paired with Patrick Hofmann at the wheel of the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS CS. In 2022, Fontana had fought for Pro-Am title through to the final round, sharing driving duties with Jacoma.

Fontana’s on-track action will get underway on the Friday with free practice for the GT4 European Series, while on the Saturday he will alternate between the two championships. At 16:50 Alex will dispute Race 1 with the GT cars, while on the Sunday he will be back behind the wheel of the GT 3 for qualifying for the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS at 9:45. Then comes Race 2 in the GT4 European Series at 11:20 and the start of the Barcelona 3 Hours at 15:00.
