Alex Fontana ready for his Sprint Cup debut

20/06/2018

The Swiss driver at the wheel of the Emil Frey Racing Jaguar is back on track at Misano this weekend

Alex Fontana is about to make his debut in the Blancpain GT Series, Sprint Cup. For three years since the start of the European GT3 car series of reference, Fontana has always participated, with excellent results, in the Endurance Cup, the series based on three-hour races with the addition of the Spa-Francorchamps 24 Hours, a true jewel in the category’s crown, along with the 1000 Km in preparation for the classic Belgian marathon. Misano is the setting for an important debut for Alex in the Sprint series, a completely different and highly innovative format compared to the Endurance races, with two free practice sessions, two qualifying sessions and two races with two distinct grids and more points at stake. The Romagnola weekend also represents an important curtain raiser for the Swiss driver’s revised plans and those for the Jaguar developed by Emil Frey Racing as thanks to the pole positions and the podiums conquered in the Silver Cup, the Swiss team has decided to complete the entire Endurance Cup season, with the objective of taking its first class title. Misano offers a great opportunity for Alex to claim point together with his Canadian teammate Mikael Granier, an appetiser for the night challenge of Spa, with the race on the Saturday due be held in the splendid light of the sunset on the Adriatic riviera.

Alex Fontana
“Racing at Misano will be a great experience, I’ve not been there for eight years, not since I made my debut at the wheel of a Formula 3 single-seater. We tested over the winter with positive results, although naturally the high temperatures expected this weekend may well change things up.Only when the engines are started will we know whether in our favour or otherwise and this is naturally a burning question for us all, the drivers, the team and the fans.Racing at sunset will also be interesting and will help us prepare for the race at Spa, this being an opportunity to run in the same difficult conditions we’ll find in late July.I was delighted to learn last week that Emil Frey Racing will complete the full Endurance Cup season, an announcement that will undoubtedly give us a boost of positive energy as we progress in the championship.”
