Alex stars in GP3 at Spa in the Belgian Grand Prix meeting

03/09/2012

The Swiss driver  Alex Fontana, signed by Jenzer Motorsport to drive the Swiss team’s third car in the GP3 event disputed on the occasion of the Belgian Grand Prix, undoubtedly drove one of the best races of his career. The Lugano-based driver, having scored points with a 10th place finish in Race 1 on the Saturday, put on a show on the Sunday to conquer a hugely important 4th place in Race 2.  In the presence of the Formula 1 circus, Fontana started extremely well from the fifth row to close in on the leading drivers. Careful not to become embroiled in the barging at Les Combes on the first lap, he then set about staging an exceptional charge. Alex firstly conjured up a spectacular move to overtake the championship leader Mitch Evans and before beginning to hustle Williamson, an experienced driver with a World Series background. Fontana finished less than two seconds outside the podium places, conserving his tyres early in the race thanks to a sensitive driving that has always been a feature of his  style. The most important thing to underline is the fact that after just a single acclimatization race in Hungary last month, Alex was the leading Jenzer driver over this weekend ahead of Patric Niederhauser, already a race-winner this season and Robert Visoiu, who is competing in a number of series.

“The car was already running well in Race 1 yesterday, but today it was simply perfect. I’m really pleased to have been able to repay the Jenzer Motorsport team that gave me this opportunity. We've put crucial points on the board for the constructors' championship, something that’s extremely important to the team. I’m also delighted for Alessia Regazzoni who was supporting me in official form for the first time, after the years alongside her father Clay. Together we make a great team. On Wednesday we’ll be leaving together for Hungary together where we’ll be tackling the penultimate Formula 2 race and trying to repeat the performance achieved here at Spa-Francorchamps.
