Double podium for Alex Fontana at Misano

25/06/2018

On his debut in the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup the Swiss driver secures second and third place finishes in Italy

Alex Fontana continues to enjoy a remarkable run of positive results. At the wheel of the Jaguar entered by Emil Frey Racing, the Swiss driver was making his debut in the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup and secured two podium finishes on the Misano circuit. Sharing the car with Mikeal Grenier, with who he also races in the Endurance Cup, Fontana brought home a further two trophies at the end of two enthralling and intensive races. The weekend opened with free practice on Friday, with the teeming rain that hit the circuit dedicated to the memory of Marco Simoncelli, rendering all but vain the first session. In the evening, instead, the team condensed the work and was able to complete useful nocturnal preparation for the Spa 24 Hours, scheduled for the end of July. In Race-1, with Alex taking the first stint, the Jaguar proved to be very competitive and Grenier was able to cross the line in second place in class. On the Sunday instead, with the roles reversed, it was Alex who crossed the line in third place in the Silver Cup, after having put on a show in numerous close and thrilling duels. Following pole position at Le Castellet and the subsequent podium, the two Misano races took the Swiss driver’s trophy count to three in the month of June alone.

“I’m clearly delighted with the results we achieved. We were very competitive in the Silver Cup and in the overall standings too where, on a track on which we knew we didn’t have the best car, we were able to hold our own. We recorded a 10th and an 11th place in qualifying, which placed us in the middle of the field, alongside cars that compete regularly in the Sprint Cup and are actually in the running for the title. I would like to thank Emil Frey Racing for having given me and Mikael the opportunity to race here and collect two podium finishes that will without doubt provide further encouragement ahead of the Endurance Cup race at Spa-Francorchamps, where we’ll also be teaming up again with Adrian Zaugg.”
