BREAKING NEWS: The Swiss driver will debut at Monza on Sunday behind the wheel of a Ligier LMP3
Following the splendid victory in the Blancpain GT Endurance Series Silver Cup at Monza with the Emil Frey Jaguar and the podium obtained at Shanghai in the first race of the season in the China Touring Car Championship, Alex Fontana has now been called to make his debut in the Sports Prototype category. A further piece in the mosaic making up the Swiss driver’s curriculum and career. Fontana has been signed at the last minute to drive in the Monza 4 Hours scheduled for this coming weekend. Having distinguished himself for the natural speed that has seen him on the front row of grids in both the European reference series for GT cars and the leading touring car series in China, Alex will now debut in the European Le Mans Series, which is to all intents and purposes the modern version of the Sports Prototype championship that thrilled Swiss motorsport fans in the Seventies and Eighties with the performances of Clay Regazzoni and Jo Siffert. Alex will be driving the Racing for Poland team’s Ligier JSP3-Nissan, alongside Henning Enqvist of Sweden and Tomasz Blocharski of Poland Fontana is entered in the LMP3 class, while the field of no less than 43 cars will also feature the LMP2 and GT classes.

"I received the call from the Racing for Poland team that is associated with the French Group Virage operation just as I was boarding the plane for China, which made the long trip fare more enjoyable. This is a great opportunity, one not to be missed and one of those that arrive out of the blue. The world of Endurance racing has always attracted me and, despite my experience in GT cars in recent years, I’ve always hoped to have chance of racing with a prototype one day. With respect to what I have driven previously, this is a completely different design, but fortunately I’ll be able to use the free practice sessions to get to know the ins and outs of the car. Over the winter I had a chance to complete a few laps with the Ligier in Spain, just fater it had been delivered to the Polish team that is racing in the series for the first time. It was thanks to my recent performances at Monza and Shanghai that they decided to call me in for this race.”
