Alex Fontana wins at the Hungaroring

08/09/2012

An excellent showing by Alex Fontana at the Hungaroring today. The twenty-year-old Swiss driver demonstrated clear superiority as he recorded his first victory in the FIA Formula 2 championship, winning Race 1 disputed on the track built on the outskirts of Budapest. This was a day to remember in that as well as confirming Fontana as force to be reckoned with in the championship, the win came 42 years after the last victory by a driver from the Canton Ticino in Formula 2: Clay Regazzoni.

“I think we’ve managed to do something very important today. As soon as I found myself in second place I realised that I was actually quicker than Mirocha. I made a decisive attack at the first opportunity and as soon as I took the lead I pressed hard for four or five laps, building up a cushion that would allow me to close out the race comfortably, which is what I managed to do. Here at the Hungaroring, my Williams was simply perfect and for this I’d like to thank the Formula 2 mechanics who worked on the car. Big thanks too to all those who followed me here to Hungary and to those who watched from home. Today was one of those days I won’t forget in a hurry.”

Tomorrow’s schedule features qualifying for Race 2 at 9.45 and the start of the race itself at 14.30.
