Successful Debut in Formula 2

15/04/2012

As debuts go it could hardly have been better. To be quite honest, coming home from Silverstone with two podium finishes is a result that goes way beyond my most wildly optimistic predictions. I tried to work systematically from the word go on the Friday with the primary objective of learning how to use the new Yokohama tyres and to fine-tune the relationship with the people who have been closest to me over this weekend, the engineer Ruben and the chief mechanic Alex, both from Spain.

I think there was a positive feeling from the off and this bodes extremely well for the rest of the season. Formula 2 races are very different to those I was used to in Formula 3. The car is much more physical and demanding. The races are longer and also more tactical. Apart from those provided by the use of overboost, opportunities for overtaking are much more limited. These are all factors I took into consideration in terms of preparing for the race and will continue to be things I’ll be working on in the future. Here at Silverstone I was accompanied by a group of friends who gave me great support and were as delighted as I was. I know that they’ll be even more numerous in Portugal! So, it’s arrivederci for now and I’ll see you on track at Portimao in a fortnight or online on this site.
